Hole 2

Hole 1

Hole Description

A gentle enough looking start, but it’s into the prevailing wind, and the out of bounds on the right beckons. Well bunkered approach too, take your par start and move along.

Pro's Tip

Pro’s tip: A gentle opener albeit a great risk/reward hole, the big hitter might be tempted to take on the green but the handicap player should avoid the bunkers and hit the fairway and leave a short iron in to leave an opening birdie chance.

Hole 2

Hole Description

A routine par 5, nice and straight, but again the out of bounds waves at the errant tee shot, especially on the windy days. That fairway looks narrower and narrower as you go down it too.

Pro's Tip

Chance to hit this par 5 in two if you find the fairway but avoid the fairway bunkers at all cost. Most players will play this as a three shot hole and try to create another birdie putt.

Hole Description

Starting to test you now, especially off the back tees. A dog leg to the right, but if you overdo that off the tee then it’s either the trees or the farmers field for you. A lovely green surrounded and guarded by cunning bunkers.

Pro's Tip

Pro’s tip: Avoid the right hand trees as that will be a chip out sideways, a left tee shot opens up the entrance to the green for a second shot that can land short and run up.

Hole 4

Hole Description

Lot’s of room on the left, but a narrow avenue to play from, and no margin for error on the right side. Fairway bunkers, and an upturned green with big run-offs, and deep bunkering. You’ll be happy with a par here.

Pro's Tip

A good straight hit is required off the tee, don’t be tempted to cut the dog leg as trouble awaits. The first of many unusual undulating greens on the course, depending on the wind your second shot can be carried all the way or hit into the dip short of the green and run up the slope.

Hole 5

Hole Description

No fairway, very undulating and small green, huge bunkers, big run-off the sides and back. Not a long hole, but needs precision. Pin positions range from difficult to fiendish.

Pro's Tip

First par 3 and the hole name gives you a clue, hit the centre of the green at all times and you’ll have a birdie putt. Get greedy and you’ll face a likely impossible par save. Take great care on this green, subtle undulations everywhere!

Hole 6

Hole Description

Stroke index 1. Long, narrow, dog legs up to the left, small, sloping green with a huge bunker short right, and massive run-offs everywhere else. Take your par, and run.

Pro's Tip

The signature hole, Hogan. One of the finest par 4’s in the UK, a blind double fairway awaits the conservative tee shot leaving a very demanding long second shot to a small raised target. The more aggressive tee shot to the narrow undulating fairway leaves a better chance to find the green. However if you don’t succeed with your tee shot you’d be advised to not go with your ego and chip it further down the fairway leaving a short iron for your 3rd shot. A five here is by no means a disaster, but tempting to go for the miracle shot will usually lead to a high number. Try and avoid the famous “Hogan bunker” front right of the green at all costs.

Hole 7

Hole Description

A long par 4, especially off the back pegs, but often with the wind. A big carry to a narrow landing zone off the tee, and then you need to commit to the second to get it up and onto the wide, double level and heavily contoured green.

Pro's Tip

Strong par 4 which requires a good tee shot to reach in two shots. Safe line is towards the right fairway bunker but be careful when downwind as you don’t want to be in it. Plenty room to the right off the tee and a running shot up to the green will reward you with a birdie chance.

Hole 8

Hole Description

Relatively newly re-designed, this hole is all about position off the tee to set you up for the sharp right dog-leg. The tee shot kicks way right, and if it does then your second shot is blind.

Pro's Tip

Pro’s Tip: Short par 4, trust the marker post off the tee as anything right of that will kick further right into the rough. Find the fairway here and you will set up a short iron to a fairly flat green, good birdie chance.

Hole 9

Hole Description

There’s a tee and a green, with absolute rubbish in-between, massive bunkers right and left, and huge run-off behind. Very slopey green too. Good luck.

Pro's Tip

Great par 3, only a well struck tee shot will find the putting surface as the green will shed off any ball landing at the side of the green. Anything landing short will stay there but it’s a “good miss” and a chance for a par. Deep bunkers surround the green and will require a skilful shot to save par. Green slopes back to front so ideally leave yourself an uphill putt.

Hole 10

Hole Description

Tricky left to right dog-leg and a fair carry off the tee, especially from the back tees, with a massive hill and bunker guarding the right side. Second shot is into an inviting, sloping green, but it’s a very narrow approach. Stroke 2, although you wonder why, until you’ve played it.

Pro's Tip

Pros Tip: Strong dog leg par 4 that requires a good straight tee shot, don’t be tempted to cut the dogleg as big trouble awaits there. Left side of the fairway opens up the green which sits high at the back so again keep short of the hole with your approach shot.

Hole 11

Hole Description

Another Par 3 where they seem to have misplaced the fairway. Bunkers front and left and right, wee stream to the right. On the plus side, it’s a big, relatively flat green. Stroke 18, allegedly, but can be anything from a rescue to an 8 iron, depending on the wind.

Pro's Tip

Strong par 3 which depending on the wind can vary from a short iron to a long one. Room to land short over the bunkers and run up onto the green, only a good straight hit will get it’s reward here with the big front right bunker being the main hazard to avoid.

Hole 12

Hole Description

Very tricky par 4, usually into the wind, and the second shot is over a double meandering burn, to an upturned green with severe run offs into heavy rough, and big mounds. Furthest point of the course, and you’ll be glad when this one is behind you.

Pro's Tip

Fantastic par 4, difficult fairway to hit as it has a bit of a hogsback and repels anything other than a straight tee shot. Second shot must be carried over the Buddon Burn to a firm raised green which has run offs short, left and right. Make a four here and you will be a happy golfer.

Hole 13

Hole Description

Intimidating tee shot with heavy rough off the fairways, and water right in front of you, and also waiting for you if you overhit the tee shot. Second shot is a very narrow entrance, and the ball often kicks off every way, except the right way.

Pro's Tip

Lovely par 4 which can play gentle with the prevailing wind but the complete opposite when facing an easterly. A complex green which allows a running shot in or do you try to fly it all the way. No bunkers on this hole but plenty hillocks and burn to keep your senses awake.

Hole 14

Hole Description

Long Par 5, usually a 3-dunter, with railway lines hugging the right side, and bunkers and trees to punish you too. The new green (25 years old now) is tucked into the left at the end, with bunkers front left and all the way up the right side. Still a decent birdie opportunity though.

Pro's Tip

Pro’s Tip: Second of the par 5’s which for most is a three shot hole. Avoid the bunkers on the tee and second shot and a birdie chance can follow. Beware of the Dundee to Aberdeen rail line of course but a drive down the right centre can give the bigger hitter a chance to get home in two. Tight green surrounded by bunkers, your sand play will need to be good here.

Hole 15

Hole Description

A long Par 3, but at least there is a fairway this time. Looks easy enough, and a lovely, but sloped green, invites you in, but a tight hit off the tee.

Pro's Tip

Pro’s Tip: Last par 3 and its a long one requiring a solid straight hit, flat green at the front but very tricky in the back portion. Take a par here any day.

Hole 16

Hole Description

The Clubhouse is in view, and it’s not that long a hole, but new bunkers down the right narrow that landing zone right down, and it’s a tricky double layer green. Heavy rough down the left side too.

Pro's Tip

Pro’s Tip: Strategic bunkers guard this fairway on both sides and need to be avoided, an undulating fairway can leave various tricky lies for the second shot into a green that sits front to back.

Hole 17

Hole Description

Another hole looking right down into the Clubhouse, with a large pretty flat green. The wide looking fairway narrows down right where you are going to land, and that out of bounds on the right looks miles away, but for the over-exuberant fader it’s closer than you think.

Pro's Tip

Wide fairway up to 230 yards but narrows if you to hit it further down this hole. A flat appearance is deceptive for the second shot so trust the yardage and take plenty club for the shot into the green.

Hole Description

A tricky finish, with the tee hard over next to the out of bounds, and the tiger tee actually over that boundary. A tight left to right dog-leg into a closely bunkered green awaits, and it always plays longer than you think.

Pro's Tip

Pro’s Tip: Wonderful finishing hole with a tee shot aiming at the classical Panmure clubhouse. Demanding hole that requires two fine shots to reach the green and if you do that your after golf drink in the 19th hole will taste all the sweeter.
